Eco Craft Ideas: Bee Wax Wraps

Crafting is fun to do as a hobby alone, with friends or with your kids! Here is an environmentally friendly challenge for you to try this year. This craft is best avoided with younger kids due to the hot wax.

Bee wax wraps are a great replacement for cling film or for sandwich boxes. You can use them to wrap an apple, a sandwich, etc, or cover a dish that you are serving at a family buffet. They are very versatile. All you need to do to wash them is to rinse them under lukewarm water and leave to air dry.

All you need is some cotton fabric, pinking shears, bee wax in pellet form, and an old baking tray.

Be careful when using hot wax as it can burn very easily.

  1. Cut the fabric using the pinking shears into the shape you want. I would do a variety of sizes and shapes to provide you with options.

  2. Then preheat the oven at 200C.

  3. Place the fabric on the baking tray and lightly cover with bee wax pellets - you can always add more so less is better than loads and when it melts it runs along the fabric. If your fabric is too big for the tray it is okay to fold it over. Just make sure you put extra wax on the edges and turn it over half way through to check on the underside. This stage requires a watchful eye as it literally only takes a minute or so.

  4. Carefully, using a fork, peel the wax wrap off and pick it up using the first edge you peeled away. Then gently shake it over the try to ensure and wax drips off and doesn’t burn you. Then wave the sheet gently in the air to dry for about 20 seconds.

  5. Repeat the process until you have the right number of wraps. I warn you though, it is addictive! :)
