Why are men are at the forefront when we talk about history? Who are the forgotten, yet ground-breaking, women of history? How does gender affect our daily lives and how has this changed over time? From Anne Lister’s diaries to the second wave feminists’ idea of wages for housework, from early animationist Lotte Reiniger to the quite recent Magdalene Laundries, we examine changing perceptions about gender and gender roles through the last 300 years.
Over the 8 sessions you will widen your knowledge of history and gender studies and enable them to discuss the impact of women in history. This course is for beginners and improvers.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
Describe the impact that one of the women studied has had on society at the time.
Describe the impact that one of the women studied has had on our study of history.
Outline struggles that women have faced in the past.
Present your ideas to the group and engage in small group work.
What else do I need to know?
Bringing a notepad, a folder for handouts and writing equipment would be helpful.
